Postpartum Body Contouring: Supporting Your Body After Pregnancy

Pregnancy and childbirth can change the body in ways that exercise and healthy eating do not always address. You may notice loose-looking skin, changes around your abdomen, stubborn pockets of fat, fluid retention, muscle weakness, or a different overall shape.
These changes are normal, and there is no deadline for looking or feeling a certain way after having a baby. But when you feel ready to focus on yourself again, non-surgical postpartum body contouring may help support your personal goals.
At The Body Sculpt LA in Burbank, we take a personalized approach. Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all “mommy makeover,” we look at your concerns, recovery, health history, and lifestyle before recommending any treatment.
What Happens to the Body After Pregnancy?
Your body adapts throughout pregnancy to support a growing baby. After delivery, it takes time for your uterus, abdominal wall, connective tissue, skin, hormones, and fluid balance to adjust.
Common postpartum concerns may include:
Loose or crepey-looking abdominal skin
A softer or less defined midsection
Stubborn fat around the abdomen, hips, thighs, or arms
Puffiness or temporary fluid retention
Reduced abdominal strength
Changes in skin texture or the appearance of cellulite
A feeling that your body shape has changed
Some changes gradually improve as the body heals. Others may remain even with consistent exercise and nutrition. Neither experience means you have done anything wrong.
When Can You Begin Postpartum Body Contouring?
There is no single timeline that is right for everyone. The early postpartum period is a time of major physical recovery, and healing can take longer after a cesarean birth or pregnancy-related complications.
Before beginning body-contouring treatments, you should be fully healed and receive clearance from your obstetrician or other qualified healthcare provider. Your provider may recommend waiting longer depending on:
Whether you had a vaginal or cesarean delivery
Incisions, tearing, infection, or other complications
Your current bleeding and recovery
Diastasis recti or pelvic-floor symptoms
Medications and underlying health conditions
Whether you are breastfeeding
The specific treatment and body area being considered
Body-contouring treatments are not performed during pregnancy. Breastfeeding clients must disclose that they are nursing because eligibility varies by treatment, device instructions, and individual health history.
Postpartum Treatments Available at The Body Sculpt LA
Your recommended plan will depend on your goals and whether each treatment is appropriate for you.
Lymphatic Drainage and Endosphere Therapy
Some clients feel puffy or heavy as their fluid balance continues to change after pregnancy. Lymphatic-focused treatments and Endosphere therapy use gentle or rhythmic mechanical techniques to support circulation and lymphatic movement.
These treatments may help you feel less puffy and can temporarily improve the appearance of skin texture. They are not a treatment for blood clots, postpartum swelling caused by a medical condition, or other health complications. Sudden, severe, painful, or one-sided swelling requires prompt medical attention rather than a cosmetic treatment.
Radio Frequency Skin Tightening
Radio frequency uses controlled heat within the skin to support collagen and elastin. It may be recommended for clients who want firmer, smoother-looking skin on areas such as the abdomen, arms, or thighs.
Changes generally develop gradually, and results vary. Radio frequency cannot remove a large amount of excess skin or provide the same outcome as surgery.
Red Light Therapy
Red light therapy is a gentle, noninvasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths of light to support cellular activity and healthy-looking skin. It may be included as part of a broader postpartum body-care plan when appropriate.
CO₂ Cryo Fat Reduction and Skin Tightening
For eligible clients, CO₂ Cryo may be used to target localized areas and support a slimmer, tighter-looking appearance. This is a contouring treatment—not a weight-loss solution—and it is best suited to specific areas rather than overall postpartum weight loss.
EMSCULPT NEO
EMSCULPT NEO combines muscle stimulation with radio frequency and may help strengthen and define the treated muscles while supporting fat reduction. It may be considered for the abdomen or other approved areas after you have healed and received medical clearance.
However, a cosmetic muscle-stimulation treatment is not a substitute for medical evaluation or postpartum physical therapy. If you have abdominal separation, pain, pressure, leaking, pelvic heaviness, or suspected pelvic-floor dysfunction, speak with your healthcare provider or a pelvic-floor physical therapist before treatment.
Can Body Contouring Treat Diastasis Recti?
Diastasis recti is a separation or widening along the connective tissue between the abdominal muscles. It is common after pregnancy, but its severity and symptoms vary.
Body contouring should not be presented as a cure for diastasis recti. If you notice abdominal bulging, coning, weakness, back discomfort, or pelvic-floor symptoms, an appropriate healthcare professional should evaluate you. Your care plan may include guided rehabilitation, physical therapy, or—for severe cases—a surgical consultation.
Once you are properly evaluated and cleared, certain cosmetic treatments may complement your fitness or rehabilitation goals, but they do not replace them.
What Results Can You Expect?
Postpartum body contouring is designed to support gradual, natural-looking improvements. Depending on the treatment plan, clients may pursue:
Firmer-looking skin
Improved muscle tone and definition
Smoother-looking texture
Reduced appearance of cellulite
Less visible puffiness
More sculpted-looking contours
Results vary from person to person. Your starting point, recovery, treatment consistency, lifestyle, genetics, and future pregnancies can all influence your outcome. A series of sessions is often recommended, followed by maintenance when appropriate.
Postpartum Body Contouring Is Not About “Bouncing Back”
Your body did something extraordinary, and it does not need to be rushed back to an earlier version of itself. Postpartum treatments should be a personal choice—not a response to pressure, comparison, or an unrealistic timeline.
Our role is to meet you where you are, listen to your goals, and help you understand what non-surgical treatments can and cannot do. Sometimes the right recommendation is to begin a customized plan. Other times, the best choice is to allow more healing time or speak with your healthcare provider first.
